We’re not blocking traffic, we ARE traffic!

On Friday I participated in Critical Mass Vancouver.  If you haven’t heard of Critical Mass it’s a monthly gathering of cyclists that ride around a city or town.  There is no predetermined route and the group takes up the roads by ignoring red lights & blocking traffic at intersections.

First started in San Francisco in 1992 it is now celebrated in many cities around the world - usually on the last Friday of every month.

The underlying purpose is to draw attention to the fact that people ride bikes for transportation & roads should be more accommodating for cyclists.  Irate motorists often see it as a mass protest with the deliberate attempt to obstruct traffic & cause disruption.

For someone who hasn’t ridden a bike in a long time it was awesome to be able to safely ride on the road with other happy cyclists.  I think I will be participating in this as a regular monthly event.
